How Sterling Scholars are selected: | Candidates are selected on the school level by the teachers in each department. Judgments on all levels are made based on a student’s achievements in three main areas: scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.
| |
What is required of students who are selected to be Sterling Scholars: | Students selected to represent BHS in each category will be required to create and submit an extensive electronic portfolio showcasing achievements in each of the main judging areas: Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship. Many school representatives will then advance to the semi-final round where they will be interviewed by panels of judges. After the final interviews have been completed, finalists will attend an awards ceremony where the winners and runners-up for the Wasatch Front region are announced.
General information about Sterling Scholar: | 1. What is Sterling Scholar? Sterling Scholar is a prestigious scholarship competition for seniors that has been sponsored by The Deseret News and KSL 5 Television for over 50 years. The purpose of the program is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah. 2. Why apply? Sterling Scholar is a program that is recognized by colleges and universities throughout Utah and the Intermountain West. Many state and private universities offer substantial scholarships and stipends to semi-finalists and finalists. However, winning a scholarship is not the only benefit. Because of the program’s focus on academics, leadership, and community involvement, participation in the Sterling Scholar program looks attractive on college applications regardless of whether or not a student becomes a state finalist. Students are also publicly recognized in their schools and communities for their exemplary achievements.
