How Sterling Scholars are selected:

Candidates are selected on the school level by the teachers in each department. Judgments on all levels are made based on a student’s achievements in three main areas: scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.

1. Scholarship – Judges will examine students’ scholarship on two levels: overall scholarship and category scholarship. A student’s GPA, difficulty of class schedule, standardized test scores, class ranking, etc. will be taken into account for overall scholarship. Category scholarship, which receives particular emphasis in the judging, includes a student’s accomplishments and talents in their specific category.

2. Leadership – Judges will look at responsibilities placed on a student by his or her teachers, community leaders, religious leaders, fellow students, etc. Evidence of positive influence on others will also be considered as an indication of leadership.

3. Citizenship – Also referred to as “community service and involvement,” this judging criterion includes a student’s service to school, community, and other organizations. A student’s attitude toward contributing to and seeking out service opportunities, as well as a long‐term commitment to service will be especially important.

What is required of students who are selected to be Sterling Scholars:

Students selected to represent BHS in each category will be required to create and submit an extensive electronic portfolio showcasing achievements in each of the main judging areas: Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship. Many school representatives will then advance to the semi-final round where they will be interviewed by panels of judges. After the final interviews have been completed, finalists will attend an awards ceremony where the winners and runners-up for the Wasatch Front region are announced.

1. What is Sterling Scholar?

Sterling Scholar is a prestigious scholarship competition for seniors that has been sponsored by The Deseret News and KSL 5 Television for over 50 years. The purpose of the program is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah.

2. Why apply?

Sterling Scholar is a program that is recognized by colleges and universities throughout Utah and the Intermountain West. Many state and private universities offer substantial scholarships and stipends to semi-finalists and finalists. However, winning a scholarship is not the only benefit. Because of the program’s focus on academics, leadership, and community involvement, participation in the Sterling Scholar program looks attractive on college applications regardless of whether or not a student becomes a state finalist. Students are also publicly recognized in their schools and communities for their exemplary achievements.

What freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can do to prepare for Sterling Scholar:

Create and add to your personal “brag list.” Concentrate on the three main areas of judging.

• Scholarship: Work on maintaining a high GPA. Take challenging classes, including honors and AP classes. If you are interested in pursuing a particular category, take a lot of classes relating to that category. Look for ways to apply your knowledge OUTSIDE of the classroom. For example, if you want to compete in English, try to get some of your work published and participate in writing contests. If you want to compete in science, participate in science fairs and look for internship opportunities in the science field.

• Leadership: Seek opportunities to be a leader in your school, neighborhood, and community. Be a good example to everyone you meet. Be proactive and responsible. Look for leadership opportunities within your category.

• Citizenship: Look for ways in which you can initiate service projects and opportunities outside of the organizations you already belong to (NHS, Boy Scouts, church youth groups, etc.). Be aware of the needs of others and look for ways to serve them. Be a good citizen and show that you care about your community. Try to use your talents in your category to reach out.
