The following are steps for obtaining an education in speech language pathology in Texas.

Step 1: Maintain good grades in high school, particularly in math and science classes, as admission into a reputable college can be competitive. Since many speech therapists in Texas end up helping bilingual education students with their English-speaking skills, special attention to Spanish classes is highly suggested. Many times, speech therapists in Texas must consult with parents of bilingual education students, who generally only speak Spanish. Step 2: Enroll and maintain high grades in a bachelor’s degree program from a reputable college or university. The most common major for prospective speech therapists is communication sciences. Again, taking electives in Spanish or other foreign languages is highly suggested. In Texas, if a student completes a baccalaureate degree with 25 hours of clinical observation, 25 hours of assistive experience, and 24 hours specifically in speech language pathology, they can apply for an assistant license.

Step 3: In order to get into graduate school, bachelor’s students must usually take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE).

Step 4: After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, students should then enroll in master’s or doctoral degree programs through online or campus based speech pathology schools in Texas that have been accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation. At least sixteen colleges or universities in the state of Texas offer graduate degrees in speech language pathology. Students will encounter course work in biology, anatomy, physiology, and specific courses dealing with the physical nature of communication and common disorders that affect the human body’s ability to speak. Continuing Education and Licensure Renewal for Texas Speech Language Pathologists

Speech language pathologists in Texas must renew their licenses after two years. The fee is $106 for full licenses and $53 for assistant and intern license holders. In each renewal period, professional speech therapists must complete 20 hours of continuing education. If a therapist holds duel licensure for both speech and audiology, then 30 hours are required. Two of the continuing education hours must deal with ethics training. Renewal can be done online at the Board’s website.

The Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Texas at El Paso is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association. Admissions to the graduate program are limited by the resources available.

Admission Requirements

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent degree at an international institution, or through the Five-Year degree plan.
2. Minimum of 21 semester hours of upper-division undergraduate courses related to communication disorders.
3. Demonstration of academic achievement and potential as indicated by the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and upper level undergraduate and graduate coursework (a minimum GPA of 3.0 in upper-division preparatory SPLP undergraduate courses).
4. Other evidence of background and experience that might be available.
5. A 550 or higher on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for international applicants.

Admission is competitive. The number of students admitted each semester is dependent on available program resources.

NOTE: To engage in clinical practicums, which are a crucial element in the curriculum, students in Speech Language Pathology must pass a background check. Therefore, applicants accepted to Speech Language Pathology will be required to undergo and pass a background check prior to matriculation. Applicants will be responsible for the costs in obtaining a background check report.

MS Degree Requirements

Majors in Speech-Language Pathology must complete the following:

Comprehensive written project and oral examinations are required for students who choose not to write a thesis. Students who write a thesis are required to defend the thesis in an oral examination. Students who choose to write a thesis must enroll in SPLP 5398 and SPLP 5399.

Grade Criteria

1. A D or F grade in any graduate course will result in immediate dismissal from the graduate program and no reconsideration of the student for readmission will be taken.
2. No more than two (2) C grades will be permitted. A third C grade will lead to immediate dismissal from the graduate program and no reconsideration of the student for readmission will be taken. If a C grade is earned, it must be matched with an A grade in a course within the program’s required SPLP courses, and this must be accomplished the semester (fall/spring/summer) immediately following the semester the C was earned.

36 Semester credit hours of graduate academic coursework and five semesters of clinical practicum for completion of Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology:

Total Graduating Hours: 51 Credit Hours
