I recently got into Silent Hunter 5 after passing over the series throughout years worried of it's steep learning curve. I'm happy to say I've fell in love with it.

Ubisoft, though, did not give it enough love and the game requires a good amount of mods and unofficial patching to make it a great game. That's par the course for Ubi, but it's still a solid game when you get past that. Being able to walk around a German submarine and having to squeeze past your sweaty, stinky crew mates brings me a massive amount of immersion a sim hasn't given me in a long time.

Doing some research I have yet to find any news of the series continuing or being discontinued, a Silent Hunter Online F2P which has servers still up but development seems abandoned, and no other game company attempting to step up to the plate and take a shot.

Is the subsim genre too niche to be profitable? I don't know the sale numbers on Silent Hunter V but I can't imagine they were overwhelming. There sadly isn't an active subreddit to discuss the game or submarine simulators in general so I'm imagining the playerbase isn't too massive.

If you want to play Silent Hunter V or any of the previous titles, head to www.subsim.com for mods because they are the only active community I could find. Really nice crew over there with massive amount of mods and patches.

Share your thoughts. Talk about your past subsim experiences. I hope this genre can be brought back to life in the future.
