An Introduction to MIT Bi-Wire Cables

Not only did cable designer Bruce Brisson introduce the first MIT audio cable in 1984, he introduced a whole new paradigm. Audiophiles know and love Music Interface Technologies speaker cables as well as classic interconnects such as the MIT 330 and 330 Shotgun. Using these cables to connect components can increase and enhance sound quality.

What is the difference between analog and digital audio cables?

Analog sound is a series of continuous vibrations that are analogous to sound waves. Before the development of digital recording, music, speech, and sound effects were etched into vinyl or written into magnetic tape in the form of magnetic waveforms. Analog cables utilize two separate wires to provide a right and a left channel. Digital audio uses only one wire as a conductor to carry multiple channels of sound, enabling the production of surround sound. There are two types of digital cables: coaxial, or coax, and optical, sometimes known as Toslink.

What factors make a cable directional?

Speaker cables are directional. If you reverse a set of speaker cables that have been playing in one direction for an extended period of time, you actually can hear the difference.Factors that make a cable directional are:

  • Direction: The direction in which it was originally burned.
  • Drawn: The way the metal has been drawn.
  • Twist: Any twisting that may be present
  • Flow: The fact that the electromagnetic wave flows in only one direction.
