For all battles and events taking place during the War of the Five Kings.

This repo contains a dataset of the battles in the War of the Five Kings from George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series.

This small side project came about because I outside ofmyregularprojects I have been looking for a small-n dataset to use as a data science teaching tool. While 'non-fiction' datasets are, frankly, more interesting, they also come with the mess, complications, and grey-areas associated with the real world. On the other end of the spectrum, randomly generated datasets can be difficult to use as a teaching tool because their outputs (e.g. visualizations or analyses) are meaningless. So, instead of generating a dataset from random-values, the George R.R. Martin series provides ample source material to create a dataset that is both fictional and with (for anyone that has read the series) built-in context. Also, I had a few hours to kill in an airport.

War of the Five Kings was a civil war in Westeros following the death of King Robert Baratheon.

Participants[edit]

Game Of Thrones War Of The Five Kings Full

The titular 'five kings' were Joffrey Baratheon, who led the loyalist forces, Robb Stark, the 'King in the North,' Balon Greyjoy, the 'King of the Iron Islands,' and Robert's two brothers, Renly and Stannis Baratheon.

Background[edit]

In the months prior to the war, hostilities had already begun following Catelyn Stark's capture of Tyrion Lannister over his alleged involvement in the assassination attempt on Bran Stark. In retaliation for this, Tywin Lannister marched the armies of House Lannister into the Riverlands.

The War of the Five Kings was officially instigated by Robert Baratheon's death, and the resulting lack of a clear heir to the throne. While Jofferey Baratheon was the heir apparent, and crowned as such following Robert's death, many in the Seven Kingdoms believed that he was not a child of Robert's, but instead the son of Cersei and Jaime Lannister.

Due to this fact, both of Robert's brothers lay claim to the throne, despite Renly Baratheon being the younger of the two, and thus, further down the line of succession. Each begins to gather their supporters and military forces.

In Winterfell, the northern houses, alongside House Tully, rally behind Robb Stark following the arrest and imprisonment of Eddard Stark in King's Landing.

Balon Greyjoy likewise secedes from the Seven Kingdoms, declaring himself the King of the Iron Islands, and launching raids along the northern coasts.

Open War[edit]

Following House Tully's official proclamation of rebellion, a Lannister army led by Jaime Lannister fought and defeated an army loyal to Robb Stark at the Battle of the Golden Tooth. Jaime's forces then proceded to lay siege to Riverrun, the seat of House Tully.

Meanwhile, Robb Stark brokered an alliance with House Frey, agreeing to a marriage proposal to unite their two houses. As a result, Robb was able to defeat Jaime Lannister's forces at the Battle of the Whispering Wood, capturing Jaime himself. In response, Tywin Lannister retreated the remaining Lannister forces to Harrenhal.

In King's Landing, Eddard Stark bends the knee to King Jofferey Baratheon, and confesses to treason, believing he will be sent north to join the Night's Watch. Instead though, Jofferey has Eddard executed, causing the northern houses and the Riverlands to declare Robb Stark the 'King in the North,' as they announce their independence from the Iron Throne.

Robb's army continues to advance south, winning skirmishes across the Riverlands. His forces eventually cross over into the Lannister homeland of the Westerlands, winning engagements at the Battle of Oxcross and the Battle of the Yellow Fork. Meanwhile, Robb dispatches Theon Greyjoy to return to the Iron Islands and his father, Balon Greyjoy, and broker an alliance with House Greyjoy.

As fighting continues in the Riverlands and Westerlands, Renly Baratheon has rallied the much of the Stormlands and the Reach to his cause. Stannis Baratheon meanwhile sails his small army from Dragonstone, confronting his brother off the coast of the Stormlands.

However, shortly after this meeting Renly is assassinated, and the houses of the Stormlands pledge their support to Stannis. The houses loyal to House Tyrell meanwhile refuse to do so, and retreat back to Highgarden. Nevertheless, with a much larger army now at his disposal, Stannis prepares for a direct assault on King's Landing.

Meanwhile in the Iron Islands, Theon's efforts to build an alliance between House Stark and Greyjoy have failed, as Balon Greyjoy has decided to declare the Iron Islands an independent kingdom. Theon turns on Robb, and declares his loyalty to his father. Theon is given a ship and a raiding party, which he takes to Torrhen's Square, before capturing a mostly undefended Winterfell. A force led by Ramsay Snow of House Bolton arrive to retake Winterfell, and Theon Greyjoy is captured.

The Battle of the Blackwater[edit]

Following the death of Renly Baratheon, Stannis marshals his entire army and fleet in a massive assault on King's Landing. In defense of the city, a trap devised by Tyrion Lannister, then serving as Hand of the King to Jofferey Baratheon, results in wildfire being used to inflict significant losses on Stannis's fleet.

Despite this, Stannis pushed forward, successfully landing thousands of troops onto the beaches of Blackwater Bay outside of the city walls. After heavy fighting, Stannis's army is on the verge of claiming victory over the outnumbered forces defending King's Landing, but are ambushed by a combined force of House Lannister and House Tyrell, marking House Tyrell's official proclomation of support for the Jofferey Baratheon's rule.

In the aftermath, Stannis is able to withdraw some of his forces, but both his army and navy have been devastated; while Jofferey and Margaery Tyrell are wed to seal the alliance between House Lannister and House Tyrell.

The Red Wedding[edit]

Despite a string of military victories, Robb Stark's campaign begins to falter after he loses the support of House Frey, due to not honoring his marriage pact. Additionally, Robb loses the loyalty of House Karstark after he executes Rickard Karstark for killing prisoners of war.

With a huge portion of his army gone, and facing a combined force of Lannister and Tyrell armies, Robb returns to the Riverlands. Determined to regain the loyalty of House Frey, Robb brokers and attends a wedding between one of Walder Frey's daughters and Edmure Tully.

However, the wedding is revealed to have been a trap, as House Frey and Bolton turn on their former liege-lords. The attending Tully and Stark family and bannermen, including Robb and Catelyn Stark, are betrayed and massacred in an event that comes to be known as the 'Red Wedding.'

Only a small number of Robb's original army, now led by Brynden Tully, manage to escape and return to Riverrun.

The Purple Wedding[edit]

The Red Wedding effectively marked an end to the north's rebellion, while the Battle of the Blackwater Bay stiffled Stannis Baratheon's efforts as well. While the rule of Jofferey Baratheon over much of the Seven Kingdoms has been resolidified, it remains very tenous.

The Iron Islands remain in revolt, fighting House Bolton in the north. Dorne and the Vale have remained neutral, refusing to declare for any side, while fighting continues in the Riverlands as an outlaw group known as the Brotherhood Without Banners conducts raids against the occupying forces. Riverun itself meanwhile is still held by Bryden Tully.

The Iron Bank meanwhile, growing impatient with the the repayment of a tremendous debt owed by the Iron Throne, provide funds to Stannis Baratheon, who uses them to reinforce his forces with mercenaries.

In an effort to secure their control, House Lannister, ruling through Jofferey, declares Roose Bolton as the new Warden of the North, and Walder Frey as Lord Paramount of the Trident.

King Jofferey's marriage to Margaery Tyrell also procedes, as Tywin Lannister hopes to cement his alliance with House Tyrell and their considerable wealth and military.

At their wedding though, Jofferey is assasinated with poison, and Tyrion Lannister is accused and arrested for the crime. Tyrion's wife, Sansa Stark, flees the capitol.

Jofferey's younger brother Tommen is subsequently crowned king, but declares Tywin Lannister as Protector of the Realm, effectively giving Tywin ruling authority. Margaery's bethrothal to House Lannister continues, with plans laid for her to marry King Tommen instead.

The Death of Tywin Lannister[edit]

The trial of Tyrion Lannister begins, and in the process, Tyrion demands and is granted a trial by combat. Tyrion chooses Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne to be his champion, while Ser Gregor Clegane represents the accusor, Cersei Lannister. In the duel, Gregor is mortally wounded, but manages to kill Oberyn, resulting in a 'guilty' verdict for Tyrion.

Awaiting his execution, Tyrion is freed by Jaime Lannister. As he makes his escape, Tyrion kills his father, Tywin, with a crossbow.

In the ensuing power vacuum, Tywin's brother Kevan Lannister takes control of the Lannister armies, a religious group called the Sparrows begins to gain power in King's Landing, and Cersei attempts to rule through her son as regent.

Fighting in the North[edit]

Following the Red Wedding, House Bolton rules the north, at least in name, with Roose Bolton serving as Warden of the North. Upon his return to the north, Roose sends his bastard son, Ramsay Snow, to recapture Moat Cailin from the occupying Greyjoy forces. He successfully does so, and as a reward, Roose legitimizes Ramsay as a Bolton.

Following the loss of Moat Cailin, the Greyjoy forces in the north gradually begin to depart, leaving House Bolton free to march on Winterfell, where he sets up a new seat of power. Roose conspires with Petyr Baelish to marry Sansa Stark, in hiding in the Eyrie, to Ramsay, in order to legitimize the Bolton rule and forge an alliance between the north and the Vale.

As House Bolton attempts to solidify their holdings, Stannis Baratheon arrives with his army and newly reinforced fleet at the Wall, just in time to repel an organized Wildling assault. Stannis reveals that he hopes to retake Winterfell himself and rally the northern houses to his cause, but does not find much support from the northern lords or Jon Snow.

His army soon becomes trapped by storms enroute to Winterfell, losing him supplies and the loyalty of his mercenaries. Furthermore, a raid led by Ramsay Bolton destroys much of Stannis's remaining provisions and horses. In the hopes of saving his campaign, Stannis sacrifices his own daughter to the Lord of Light, and the weather clears enough for him to continue his march. However, this decision leads to much of his remaining army deserting him, leaving his forces significantly depleted.

As he approaches Winterfell though, Stannis's army is caught unprepared as Roose Bolton decides to meet him in the field, rather than face a siege. In the ensuing battle, the forces of House Bolton massacre Stannis's army, and Stannis himself is killed.

With a much firmer grasp of the northern territories, House Bolton receives pledges of loyalty from House Karstark and House Umber, while Ironborn forces are completely expelled from the region after a final defeat at Deepwood Motte.

The Final Days of the War[edit]

The War of the Five Kings draws to a close as Balon Greyjoy, the last of the surviving rebel kings, is killed by his brother, Euron Greyjoy. Euron is crowned as the new King of the Iron Islands, and prepares to seek an alliance with Daenerys Targaryen in Essos. In response, Yara Greyjoy leads a splinter faction of Ironborn, stealing many of the ships in the Iron Fleet as they depart.

In the Riverlands, the siege of Riverun is broken after Edmure Tully is coerced into ordering the castle to surrender. Brynden Tully is killed after refusing to be captured, marking an end to official hostilities in the Riverlands, although the Brotherhood without Banners would continue their raids for some time.

Aftermath[edit]

In total, the conflict lasted between two and five years, and by the end of it, all five titular kings had been killed. The purported line of Robert Baratheon still held the Iron Throne, with Jofferey being succeeded by his younger brother Tommen. Following Tommen's death after he jumped from a window in the Red Keep, Cersei Lannister declared herself as the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, beginning a new Lannister dynasty.

In the north, the Bolton victory over Stanns Baratheon merely preceded yet another conflict, as Jon Snow and Sansa Stark plan to retake Winterfell, bolstered by an alliance with the Wildlings, and support from House Mormont, House Mazin, and House Hornwood. Roose Bolton himself is killed by his own son, Ramsay, who had secretly orchestrated a coup alongside House Umber and House Karstark.

In the Riverlands, the entirety of House Frey is assassinated by Arya Stark. A Lannister army is sent into the region in an attempt to maintain control.

Further south, another coup occurs in Dorne, as Ellaria Sand overthrows House Martell over Oberyn Martell's refusal to declare war on House Lannister, paving the way for a future alliance with Daenerys Targaryen.
