x265 is a library for encoding video into the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265) video compression format that was developed and standardized by the ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG.[3][4] x265 is offered under either version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL) or a commercial license, similar to the x264 project.[2][5]

Using crf is quick and dirty, it will give you a video of the quality you selected but the file size and bitrate aren’t predictable. History[edit]

x265 builds on source code from x264, an open source video encoder for the previous MPEG video coding standard H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. The project has licensed the rights to use the x264 source code for those features that can be used with HEVC.[2] Development on x265 began in March 2013.[5]MulticoreWare made the source code for x265 publicly available on July 23, 2013.[3][4]

The x265 project was initially funded by a small group of charter licensee companies that direct the development requirements and receive commercial licenses to use x265 in their products without having to release their products under the GPL 2 license.[2]

In February 2014, x265 was integrated into the popular multimedia transcoding tool FFmpeg and its fork Libav.[6]

Version 1.0 was completed in May 2014.[7]The stable version (2.0) was released on July 14th, 2016.[8]

Technical details[edit]

x265 source code is written in C++ and assembly.[2]

x265 supports the Main, Main 10, Main 12 and Main Still Picture profiles[9] of HEVC (including intra-only profiles), utilizing a bit depth of either 8 bits or 10 bits per sample YCbCr with 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 chroma subsampling.[10] x265 supports most of the features of x264 including all rate control modes (Constant QP, Constant Rate Factor, Average Bit Rate, 2-pass or multi-pass and Video Buffering Verifier rate control).[11] Visual quality algorithms include CU-Tree (the successor to x264's macroblock-tree), adaptive quantization, b-pyramid, weighted prediction and psycho-visual optimizations (psy-rd and psy-rdoq). A fully lossless mode is also supported. Temporal scalability is supported, allowing for a video to be encoded into a base layer HEVC bitstream that is half the frame rate of the input video frame rate, and an enhancement layer that can be decoded along with the base layer to enable playback at the full frame rate.

In April 2015, at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, MulticoreWare demonstrated high quality real-time 4K 10-bit HEVC encoding[12] at frame rates in excess of 60 FPS on a dual Intel Xeon E5 v3 server, occupying only one standard rack unit.

Quality and efficiency[edit]

Judged by the objective quality metric VQM in 2015, x265 delivered video quality on par with the reference encoder of the royalty-free VP9 format that competes with HEVC.[13]A codec comparison from 2015 found x265 to be a leading HEVC implementation measured by SSIM metric.[14] In August 2016, Netflix published a comparison of x264, VP9, and x265 using video clips from 500 movies and TV shows using 6 different quality metrics and found that both VP9 and x265 have 40%–50% better quality at 1080p than x264. Netflix stated that with the VMAF metric (which closely mirrors human visual experience according to the author) x265 performed substantially (19% to 22%) better than VP9.[15]

60-minute 1080p video: 8 min (compared to 1.5 hours for CPU encode).
60-minute 720p video: 3 min 30 sec (compared to 35+ min for CPU encode).
45-minute 720p video: 2 min 40 sec (compared to 30+ min for CPU encode).

Example: Star Wars – Force Awakens (2hr 18min 21 GB BDRip original) took 3.75 hours to re-encode as x265 via CPU (Intel I7 3.5GHz). Encode using the NVIDIA GPU took 10 minutes to re-encode an equivalent quality 1080p 3 GB x265.

HEVC/H.265 is the first codec efficient enough for the high-quality HD video portion of the video-audio composite file to be smaller than an accompanying 484 Kbps 5.1 audio track.

The original 720p x264 file (with AC3 384kbps 6ch audio) is 2.65GB. The re-encoded high-quality 720p x265 file (with AC3 192kbps stereo audio) is 284MB (both files are equal duration – 1 hour). The x264 screen grab is from the original file. Even though the x265 screen grab is from an additional generation video, there is very little difference between the two images.

No idea if someone even remotely discussed this topic around here, but for those who didn’t just buy their new Pascal card for games, but also wanted to use it for video encoding are probably wondering how it even works without graduating from some crazy university to get things done.

Fear not, if you figured out which program to use it’s relatively simple.

  1. Download and unzip StaxRip to a folder of your choice
  2. Download the newest version of NVEnc (3.01 as of 10/11/16)
  3. Unzip the file to your desktop or a place of your choice and open up this folder: “NVEnc_3.01NVEncCx64” and copy all of the files inside
  4. Go to your StaxRip folder and search for a folder with the name “NVEncC” (or simply go to “pathtostaxripAppsNVEncC” and overwrite all files inside
  5. Open up StaxRip and pick a place where the program should store its settings. (probably the best choice is the directory you are currently working in for portable reasons)
  6. (somewhere in the middle StaxRip asks you to install AviSynth+, just install it, it is needed for the program to properly display video streams and work with certain file formats/codecs)
  7. On the right side you see your preset, which is probably set to x264. Left click on it to select the NVIDIA H.265 profile.
  8. Double-click on “Encoder options”
  9. In the new window you see variables for “Constant QP” with I, P and B. Those are for the video quality. Lower settings, such as 18 on everything, are most of the time “same quality” as I call it, but with mostly bigger filesize. You may need to experiment a bit with it, but stock settings are good as they are for solid quality and filesize.
  10. Now to the part with 10 bit. On the left side of the window (where “Basic” is currently active), click on “Other”. After that you type “–output-depth 10” without “” into the “Custom:” field.
  11. You might want consider saving your profile, so you should click the little arrow that points down next to “OK” and click “Save Profile…”. Set a name and you’re good to go! (Click “OK” afterwards to leave the Encoding Options)
  12. Use a file of any type and drag & drop it to StaxRip (select AviSynth+ as decoder if a window pops up), select your profile, click on “Next” at the bottom right of the program window (a job gets added to the joblist) and finally, click “Start” on the “Jobs” window.

Now the program is working and will encode your video to the same folder as the source with a “_new” at the end.
